Have a great day!

When trying to cut utility bills the question may arise about whether or not to invest in a wood burning fireplace insert. The cost of an insert versus the extra cost of utilities has to be carefully weighed. As utilities continue to rise, it is necessary to do your homework to decide if a fireplace insert is right for you and your family.

If you are considering getting an insert for your fireplace, think about the following:

1. Is the fireplace itself sound or is it in need of repair?

If there is a crack is there proper ventilation?

If there are structural problems with the fireplace, get them fixed before installing an insert. Many times if a fireplace is showing structural wear or cracks, there are structural problems with the house itself in that particular area.

2. How much are you really going to use an insert?

If you don’t already use the room that the fireplace is located or the areas around it, don’t bother with an insert. Just close off the area if it gets too cold-which is what is happening already. However, if you really think you will utilized the area if it is warmer, consider usage against the price of installation.

3. Don’t do the installation yourself unless you really know what you are doing. Clearance is important.

Ventilation is critical. Every fireplace is different and so every installation of an insert has its own unique quirks. You will save money in the long run if you go ahead and hire the installation done by professionals.

Although it may be tempting to want to try and save money and try to do the installation yourself, it is best to not have to wonder whether or not proper clearances were allowed or whether the vent is the proper kind and height for the type of fuel you plan on using such as corn, wood or wood pellets.

Get it done right the first time.

Have you been thinking about adding an outdoor fireplace to liven up your home? You’re not alone as these types of fireplace designs are becoming more popular every year. But what should you be aware of with any outdoor fireplace design? Let’s take a look at some of the more important design elements. The outdoor stone fireplace is the most popular style of outdoor fireplace design with a wood burning stove being a close second.

There are very few differences between an indoor wood burning fireplace and an outdoor design. Basically, the only difference is that an outdoor unit will not use a damper and the chimney will be much shorter.

You have a wide variety of materials to choose from in building your outdoor fireplace. As I mentioned earlier stone is a popular choice, but you can use cast iron, cast aluminum, or a number of other materials for your outdoor fireplace design.

If you are going with a stone fireplace you will have even more choices on the type of stones you can use. A limestone fireplace surround design makes for a great choice. But you can use marble, slate or natural stones.

Natural stone comes in all sizes and colors which means you can have a one-of-a kind unique outdoor fireplace.

For those on a minimal budget, consider a laver, or fire ring for outdoor use. These units are not only less costly, but they are portable and can easily be moved around.

In many cases you add a fireplace mantel, firebox, hearth and other add-ons as a part of your complete outdoor fireplace kit. A kit is easy enough for most any homeowner to install and comes with everything you need in one complete package.

So if you have decided on adding a fireplace to the outside of your home, keep these tips in mind and you will have the perfect outdoor fireplace design.

While the fire is maintained at a high temperature, maximum efficiency will range between 20 and 30 percent (with an indoor/outdoor temperature difference of 40 degrees and moderate winds). But once the fire starts to die down, … May Raise Energy Costs Fireplaces were once the source of heat in American homes, so it is understandable that many homeowners believe burning wood in their fireplaces is saving them energy and fuel. Unfortunately, the opposite is actually true …

The most efficient method to burn wood is via gasification which usually require air tubes. Many of the new outside boilers and fireplaces are gasification. This guy has built one efficient burn chamber using castable refractants and a little 16 gallon steel drum which could be adapted for a wood …. For a good outdoor wood gasifier boiler you will spend 8 to 14K which is worth it for the technology & heat for the home & outbuildings, but a little steep for most people. …

Due to the popularity of fireplaces, there are many different manufacturers that are coming up with more designs and styles rather the fireplace be indoors or outdoors. Vermont Castings is among these manufacturers who have created many different beautiful styles of fireplaces including Wood Burning Fireplace Inserts. The most popular models include the Dutchwest Plate Steel fireplace insert that has a model number of DW2500X01, The Montepelier Non-catalytic fireplace insert with model number MONTP, and the Winter Warm insert constructed of cast iron. These fireplace inserts are very popular with consumers for their design, ease of use, and their efficiency rating.

The Dutchwest model from Vermont Castings is an insert that is created to be used in existing masonry fireplace openings. It features a brick line firebox including a blower. The faceplate on these Wood Burning Fireplace Inserts measure 44 1/8″W x 31″H. They weigh about 235 pounds and employ a heat circulating blower with a primary and secondary combustion system. These units help to eliminate any emissions as well as help to improve the efficiency. This unit has an efficiency rating of 64 percent. It is EPA approved meeting all standards with flying colors. You can put up to 20 logs within the capacity of the insert as well.

The main feature of the Montepelier Non-catalytic fireplace insert is that it has been said to be the cleanest wood burning insert around. These Wood Burning Fireplace Inserts have a variable speed fan. This fan helps to circulate more heat within the area being heated better than any traditional model. These units also have a baffle that can be removed for cleaning the unit very easy. They also have rear wheels, which make it very easy to install into your current fireplace opening.

The most popular model of the Vermont Castings Wood Burning Fireplace Inserts is the Winter Warm Cast Iron model because it is a very long burning fireplace insert which means a lot less work being performed by the owner. It has a cast iron construction and can be easily installed into the existing fireplace. This model has the controls mounted on the front so you can easily adjust the temperature. It is also controlled by a thermostat so that the temperature in the room stays even. These models have a 74 percent efficiency rating and has the capability of 30,000 btu’s of heat per hour. You can enjoy the heat as well as the ambient light with its large ceramic glass viewing area.

What if you won 10,000 dollars?

If you had 10 thousand dollars what would you buy and why???

There is nothing more enjoyable than coming home from a long day of work and sitting in your backyard with a glass of wine in front of a burning fire in your outdoor fireplace. It really doesn’t matter if it’s a cold night or a warm one. The soothing sounds of the fire crackling, the warming heat and warm colors washes away any stress filled day.

You are probably thinking that this would be great, but it just isn’t in your budget. Outdoor fireplace kits are a great alternative to having this without paying the high price. You can find many styles such as wood burning, electricity or gas fireplaces. It would be a good idea that you learn about the pro’s and cons of each of these. Generally your decision will be based on your specific needs, budget and capabilities. There are some states that have laws against using outdoor fireplaces that use gas, so it’s important that you learn about the laws for your state before you go through the hassle of installing these prefab kits on your own, or paying for a professional to do this for you.

You can search for the large variety of designs for outdoor fire kits right online, in many different styles and material to suit your needs. It’s amazing just how many different ones that you have to choose from, such as single faced or multifaceted. A multifaceted design will allow you to enjoy the fireplace from different angles. Take your time looking through the many styles and you will begin getting ideas for the perfect place to put your outdoor fireplace in your backyard. It is totally up to you on where you want to put it.

Shopping online for your outdoor fireplace kits will allow you to save a good amount of money and will give you the advantage of learning what others have to say about the model in the reviews. You will need to be sure that you are paying attention to the shipping cost because there are many companies that will offer a cheap price for the product but will make up for the cost through shipping cost. If you plan on installing this on your own you should look up video tutorials that will walk you through the entire process step by step. Be sure that you are watching the right video for the type of kit you have purchased.

Burning natural wood or Duraflame logs, what is the difference?

I was told that burning natural wood is easier to cause a fire, it that true? Why are Duraflame logs better for the environment?

Mantel shelves are quickly stealing the spotlight from its counterpart the fireplace. A mantel is an ideal place for your most treasured items that you want those who visit your home to see.

Choosing wood would definitely bring out the beauty of surrounding wooden furniture, the uniformity of it all making it easy on the eyes with continuity throughout the room.

Wood mantels have been around since World War I and are still one of the most chosen, simply because it’s easy to install without the help of a professional.

Like everything else, there are pros and cons when choosing wood for building your mantel shelf. Since this material is combustible you may want to check with your fire safety code department and building officer to find out about the distance of constructing your wood shelf around the fireplace.

A rustic room will benefit from an oak mantle shelf. This durable hardwood replaced the darker cast-iron, stone and slate mantels that were popular back in the Victorian era.

Oak is indeed a superior wood, which brings its outdoor beauty into the home. Because this is a versatile type of wood, it blends nicely with other natural textures.

For instance, an oak mantel will go well with a marble surround over a brick fireplace. And when it comes to accessories, brass and or wrought iron would just about do the trick.

These are just suggestions, but the final details are up to you.

Let your decorating skills shine!

Oak comes with a price tag of $1,600 and up and some hardware stores and some may want to go with a less expensive type of wood, say fiberboard for instance.

But when you consider that selecting an oak mantel could be used as a family heirloom for generations to come, the amount you pay to have the job done may not be an issue after all.

Apart from the complete electric fireplace units, there are also fireplace inserts that can be purchased. They are most especially useful when you already have a traditional fireplace and simply want it converted. Included on those inserts are electric fireplace logs.

Basically, the electric logs are inserts that can provide special burning effects to fireplaces without actually burning a single log. In a sense, that means you don’t have to deal with the hassle of collecting and cutting logs and the mess of burning them to produce heat.

Same with electric fireplace heater units, these inserts can also be purchased in many fireplace companies like charmglow and dimplex as well as in electric fireplace direct. You can have them ordered through the web or purchased in local fireplace stores.

Before you go purchasing one of it though, it would be a big help to know important things first about electric fireplace logs. Specifically, it will be an aide by making you knowledgeable and wiser when making a purchase. The following are the things that you should know about.

The usual electric logs feature a simulation of a “living flame”. It stimulates a glowing coal or log that provides an illusion of burning.

No complicated installation is needed to make it work. All that is required is an electric outlet where you can plug it in.

They come in a wide range of prices. There are those that are cheap yet are still of great quality and there are also those that come in high prices with many additional features cutting financial limitations if there is any.

No toxic gases are emitted with the use of electric logs. Apart from that, the use of them does not produce sparks that can possibly cause fire making them a safe modern device to have.

There are electric logs that come with crackling sound. This creates an even more realistic traditional fireplace ambience.

They are of different widths too of 16 inches, 21 inches and 24 inches that can be used on fireplaces in any corner of your house. It’s just really a matter of a personal choice.

Real wood are used by some manufacturers to produce them. They could be made out of oak, cherry and walnut.

In general, electric logs make contemporary electric fireplace heaters look more realistic. With them the beauty and function of a traditional fireplace is made without the hassle and the mess of having to clean the fireplace and the chimney often.

Outdoor wood burning stoves are a great way to heat your home. You start shopping for the right one and find that the options and the menu of outdoor stoves are endless. How can you know which stove will serve you the best? Here are a few questions that you will want to ask yourself that will help to narrow down the possibilities.

Most of the outdoor stoves will be boilers and heat hot water to be used in heating your house. How will the hot water be incorporated into your heating system? The outdoor boiler must be setup to get the water to your existing heating system efficiently.

How big of pieces of wood do you want to use? Some woodstove require that you cut and split your wood into much smaller pieces than other stoves do. The range can be anything from two to four feet, and the diameter of the logs can be anything that will fit through the door. Also some woodstoves will burn green wood easily and others need dry seasoned wood to burn right.

Is the unit that you are looking at an open or closed boiler? Open systems are fine for some applications, but they are not suited well for other situations. In places where you need to have the water go higher than the boiler to heat, then you need to have a closed system boiler. The piping and the pumping fixtures need to be different for each type of system. You need to know which parts will work best in each type of system to prevent premature failure of your equipment.

The installation of outdoor heating equipment is a very detailed process if it is to be installed properly. Make sure that you can see other installations of the wood burning stove that you intend to have installed. Ask to see other installations that the installer has done and talk to the homeowners about how it has worked for them.

One thing you need to remember before installing any outdoor heating equipment. Plan one spending much more time than you think you will, to feed the monster. The amount of fuel the many of these stoves take is much more than many people plan on. After a few years of using all of their Saturday’s to cut wood or haul coal they give up on the idea of an outdoor appliance. If you have to pay for the fuel or have a full time job you may want to reconsider your choice.

When you want to make your fireplace more efficient, then you should consider getting one of the many wood fireplace inserts which are actually just smaller fireplaces that can be used in you’re already existing fireplace. There are basically five different kinds of fireplace inserts that can be used.

There is the B-vent, Direct Vent, Pellet, Wood burning, and the Vent free fireplace inserts and depending on how you use your fireplace will give you the best determination on which insert is the right one for you to use. When you go shopping for a fireplace insert, you want to make sure you know the availability of fuel that you have.

If you have natural gas or propane that you use in your home, you will want to look for the B-vent, direct vent, or ventless insert. If you are in an area where you have an abundance amount of wood to burn or you just like to use wood, then the wood burning would be best for you.

If you are looking into the wood fireplace inserts in order to save you time, money, and if you want it to be very efficient, then the pellet burning fireplace insert would be your best choice.

Once you have determined which type of insert you are going to use, then you can have it installed and start reaping the benefits. These benefits include having heat even when you electric has gone out due to weather or other problems.

The wood fireplace inserts also give you better air quality due to the fact that they lower the fireplace emissions rating. They have multiple fuel options along with fuel efficiency, they are a lot more easy to clean and a lot easier to use along with being very convenient for the person who does not have a lot of time.

These inserts are great for people who love the feeling that their fireplace gives to them but just don’t seem to use it anymore because of the work involved and the cleanup that it takes in order to maintain a fireplace.

The wood fireplace inserts gives them the convenience and freedom to continue to enjoy the warmth and ambiance of their fireplace while at the same time making it a lot easier for them to use their fireplace when they are hustling and bustling around with all the time constraints that are usually put on people today.

Advice on cats and wood burning stoves…?

My husband and I bought a house with a woodstove and plan to use it throughout the winter. We are nervous about out cat trying to jump on it and getting burned. People have told us that cats are usually pretty smart about this and will sense the heat first, but I am not so sure. Does any one have any experience with cats and woodstoves and possibly any tips on avoiding an accident?

Everyone has their own choice of heaters or heating system that they want to install in their homes. Some go for a nice, large and cozy fireplace. There are those who prefer indoor stoves. Some are pretty much satisfied with an electric heating system. Others go out of their way to find the best outdoor wood burning stoves they can find.

If you belong to the last one mentioned, you should start finding tips and information about shopping for an outdoor type of wood stove. Searching for that perfect product is not an easy work. You need to be sure you won’t waste your money on something ineffective or useless especially with today’s unstable economy.

Check every detail that comes with those outdoor wood burning stoves. If you’re searching online, see if the website you are in has sample images and fine prints. It’s great if they can provide you with more information so that you can decide better. Also, you should research about the seller or the merchant. Find reviews about them and their products. Take note that the Internet is inhabited by hundreds of scammers waiting to feed on your mistakes. It pays to be extra cautious.

The same approach should be done when shopping offline. What’s nice with this is you actually see the stove and have the chance to try it out, of course, with the seller’s permission. It’s also recommended to ask the merchant for an expert advice or anything regarding the product that could affect how it will work. Since they are the sellers, they should know well enough about what they are selling. If you can’t get decent information out of them, try looking for other stores.

Keep in mind that what you like may not be what your home requires. Does your home need a small outdoor stove or a large one? What should you go for? Is it the antique or the one of contemporary style? Does it matter if it’s made of cast iron or steel?

But what if you don’t want to buy anything from the market and instead make your own outdoor wood burning stove? That’s quite possible. Just remember these useful tips before installing your own homemade outdoor stove: 1) Choose a spot away from your house, 2) If there are grasses or any form of vegetation from that spot, you should remove them first, and 3) Make sure that the area is of flat surface.
